Being the foodie nerds we are, John and I are always trying new restaurants around Raleigh. We seem to never run out of great options around here. A few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to be invited to try out a fun dining concept at more. Kitchen & Bar in downtown Raleigh called a “Chef Experience Dinner”.
What is so intriguing about this dining experience is that guests can have a custom menu built especially for them. I like to feel special, don’t you? 🙂 A few days before the dinner we completed a questionnaire about our food preferences. Then, we trusted the Chef at more. to come up with a five course menu with wine pairings based on our answers only to be revealed once we arrived at dinner. Some of the questions asked included “what is your favorite comfort food dish?”, “what spice or herb do you like to cook with most?”, and “where was your favorite meal?”. These questions really made you think. Since I was taking each food question very seriously (as foodies do), it took me wayyy longer to complete than it should have. I think I tried harder on this dinner questionnaire than the SAT. Ha! I had to think hard about what was my favorite dish and restaurant. Do you know what yours would be?
Prior to the more. mystery dinner chef experience, John and I had an half an hour to kill. We decided to take a stroll around the block from the more. restaurant. Turns out, there’s a colorful wall mural for the “Artsplosure” festival. It is located on West street just a block away from more. Needless to say, we grabbed the camera and iPhones and started snapping for this cool insta-moment!
After we had a chance to strike a pose with the mural, we made our way to the restaurant, practically giddy with excitement about this mystery dinner ahead of us. John and I had visited more. once before for a glass of wine and a few tapas. We loved the clever and helpful layout of the wine menu and the food, my goodness, the food. We figured out that the namesake “more.” was probably because as a dining guest you always wanted more of whatever dish you just tasted. Specifically, I remember the pickle plate being out of this world. The chef experience dinner was no exception. We were expecting the dishes to be flavorful, but even more that that, they were exceptionally creative and thoughtfully paired with de-lish wines that gave the experience a home run hit.
I wouldn’t want to spill ALL the secrets of our custom menu, but specifically one of our favorite dishes we tried was an Yolk-Butter Raviolo (Raviolo is a single ravioli, cute huh?) with Lemon-Chive Glaze. We also thought the dessert was incredibly innovative; Black Sesame Doughnut with Espresso Custard. WHOA. Since each group menu is tailored towards the collective questionnaire answers, I’m thinking our menu was created from our answers about comfort food pasta dishes and fond memories of hot doughnuts. However, your menu could be completely different, based on your preferences and answers. Also, the wine pairings with each course blew us away. Who knew we would end the night sipping wine with fancy doughnuts? What a sight! More. carefully selects the best wines to pair with each dish so that guests get the maximum tasting sensation. I just love that.
This was such a cool new experience offering in Raleigh that I was excited to share with my fellow foodies. Of course the more. Chef Experience Dinners must be scheduled in advance and the survey completed prior in order to allow time for the Chef to come up with a menu and order all the ingredients. To our delight, they confirmed that the mystery dinner could be tailored for special dietary needs and/or preferences (vegetarian/gluten free, etc.) and of course food allergies would be considered.
(Food makes me happy. 🙂 )
I hope you have a chance to snap a cheersworthy photo at the Artsplosure mural, then experience a taste-splosure at the more. Chef Experience Dinner in downtown Raleigh.
Here’s to art festivals, murals, good photo ops, and unique dining experiences… Cheers!
